Here is the story of my 2017 World Series of Poker experience.

by isnortbooze on July 16th, 2017

I was planning on writing this Friday and I'm glad I didn't. At that point, my story was a tragedy about how Las Vegas had eaten my alive. It is now Saturday night, my gambling spree is nearing an end, and things have stabilized to a point where I know I will somehow end up going home a slight winner. Here is the story of my 2017 World Series of Poker experience.

    The Beginning
I arrived early Wednesday so I could have a full day before I started the hard work to rest, see friends and promote Betcoin. Once I got settled, I grabbed a beer and met up with my friend Ted. He suggested that we go to the weed store. Yes, those are a thing here. I had never seen one of these in my life so I was very excited to check one out. I knew that Betcoin player BigThangz had been to the one near Rio already, so I hit him up and the three of us hopped in a cab and headed to The Apothecary Shoppe. It was very interesting and I felt a little weird, being so uneducated about legal marijuana, so I asked a lot of questions and felt like the rookie player at the poker table who always forgets to put out his antes. We all ended up getting a little something then headed back to the Rio on foot. On our way back, we hit up to Gold Coast Casino to grab a beer and I suggested we play a little blackjack first. That turned into many drinks and a lot of blackjack. I have played blackjack in many casinos before and never seen dealers this incompetent. Often, that would be annoying but they ended up making several big mistakes in our favor. Not just one dealer, either. Almost all of them. It was weird because the pit boss was a big micro manager, going as far as to berate the dealers publicly and forcing them to call her over for even the smallest cash transactions. I believe we were all up quite a bit and after a while, we walked back to the Rio, because

    Will Kassouf
I had an interview scheduled with Will Kassouf. I met him at his table where he said he would be. Only problem, he wasn't there. I found out he had just busted. I hit him up to see if he was still around, but I was cautious because people don't like talking much after busting. I will talk more about this later. We played some blackjack at Rio, and I quickly lost back what I had won at Gold Coast. I snuck off to play a little video roulette and lost a ton of money really quickly and everyone made fun of me. At the end of the night we ended up back in Ted's room to smoke some of the weed and drink more. Around 10 I told them I was going to bed but instead of going back to my room, I went back to try and win back what I lost at video roulette and ended up losing so much more. Like an obscene amount of money. I went to sleep in a demoralized stupor.

    Betcoin Poker at the Tables
I woke up the next day very saddened by my degeneracy from the previous night but ready to play some poker. Since I woke up early, I decided to jump in the $22 7k guaranteed on Betcoin. Was doing very well when I got it all in with 77 on q72 board and fortunately my opponent had Q9! Unfortunately, turn 9, river 9 and I was out and he was chip leader. I ordered some room service and relaxed until it was time to hit the table. This was the Little Drop for One Drop, the main reason I was here, and I felt like I was in good shape. As expected, 6 of the players at my table were just awful. I nearly doubled up on the first rotation after getting QJ suited twice and making good hands both times, plus getting plenty of value. After that I was feeling great and even had a new nickname, "The Queen Jack Maniac." Except I made up the nickname for myself and didn't tell anyone about it. I was wearing a Betcoin hat and Hoodie and when it got warm, I took off the hoodie to reveal a Betcoin t-shirt. Eventually someone noticed and soon I had the whole table asking me questions about both the website and bitcoin in general. It was fun getting to know everyone and pretending to take the tournament as lightly as they clearly were. There were a lot of chips flying around, so I didn't get a chance to be too aggressive because no one was folding anything. So I had to wait for a good hand. 6 hours later we were at 300/600 and I had blinded down to around 15,000 chips. Finally, I picked up my monster. Pocket KK in late position. As is typical in live tournaments, there were 4 limpers ahead of me. I raised the pot up to 5000 in the big blind and got 1 caller. We got it all in on a 622 flop. And guess what he had?! A2 suited! Of course, right? He had a little bit less than me but I was down to a few bigs and lost a few hands later with AJ vs AQ. I was feeling pretty defeated. This tournament was the main reason I came to Vegas and I didn't even make day 2. The dream of me taking a picture holding the gold bracelet while repping Betcoin was officially dead.

    Friday
Friday morning, I woke up and was still feeling bad. Not only had I busted the Little Drop the previous day, I still had all that damn video roulette money on my mind. This is when I planned on writing this article. Except I had planned the article would be about me making day 2 and not losing a ton of money playing video roulette. I decided I only had one option. Go play more video roulette. Kidding! I called my wife and she gave me a pep talk and told me I have plenty of time left and to get the fuck out there and do my thing. I decided to hold off on the article until it was less dismal. Either that or go broke in the process. Since there were no more bracelet events, I got in the earliest of the daily deepstack events, which is a $235 buy-in where first place gets around $20,000. If the players in the Little Drop were awful, the players in the $235 deepstack were extra awful. There was one decent player at my table and everyone else seemed like they had barely even played before. I was wearing one of the 5 Betcoin shirts I brought with me and although most of the players were unaware that internet poker still exists, I think I got a few of them who will at least check it out. Anyways, this tournament had a super fast structure and about 4 hours in, I was forced to get about 20bb in preflop with AQ vs AT and he hit a flush and I lost. But I wasn't through yet. I called my buddy Josh who lives here and after a slight sports betting debacle (Toronto blowing late lead, then overtime in NBA Summer League game), Josh, BigThangz and I got in this $105 bounty tournament, which I won and got like 6 bounties which put me at around $900. Afterwards, BigThangz and I went back to Gold Coast for some more ridiculously poorly dealt Blackjack. We both won good money and I had a good day, making back a lot of what I had lost the first 2 days.

    Saturday
Today is Saturday and it has also been eventful. I couldn't deal with any more tournaments, but I still had a mission to promote Betcoin (While winning money in the process) so I played some 2/5 for a few hours this afternoon. I don't normally like live cash because it is super boring, but this wasn't boring at all. Get this! Everyone was playing to have fun! And fun it was. I had to play super tight, which is a little boring, but the pots I played and won made up for that. All of the sudden I was winning overall for the trip. I ate a little food, took a nap and won a few hundred more playing blackjack. And now here I am winding down in the sportsbook, writing this article and drinking a beer. I have a decent sized parlay on Rockies and Angels which is not looking good (Rockies down 4-0 in the 2nd inning), but as long as I stay the fuck away from video roulette I should be going home a winner.

Here are some pictures from my trip. I don't take many pictures in general, but I figured I should at least document a little bit.

    In Summary
Overall, I would say that I accomplished what I needed to while I was here. While I didn't cash in the bracelet event, I ended up with a small profit, both in poker and overall. I told a ton of people about Betcoin and hopefully got some good converts out of it. It's amazing how many people either don't know that you can play poker online or just aren't aware that there is a great hidden gem of a site like this in existence. I am so grateful for having found this site and love promoting it. I have given out over 200 cards so far and plan on doing a lot more. I did not get any interviews. Most big name players don't feel like talking on a 15 or 20 minute break and the ones who have busted don't feel like talking at all. I did make some contacts and hopefully I will be able to do the interviews in the future, though. It was cool to finally chill with BIgThangz in person, and although much of that time was spent drinking heavily, I'm sure if I remembered it, it would be positively. The World Series of Poker is the one time of year that I spend around like-minded individuals and that is a big part of what makes it so special. Hope to see you all here next year!

    250 Thank You Ticket
I am giving away three 250 Guaranteed Freeroll tickets to people who respond below. Now that the main event feel is considerably narrowed, who of the remaining players is your favorite to take home the gold? Entries must be received by Wednesday at 10AM EST to qualify.

    Good luck!

man, that was some crazy beats in the 7k and the one drop. sucks on those, but seeing how it all ended, it could have been worse! glad it turned out ok in the end :D

main thing, you got to promote betcoin :D sucks that one guy busted before interview though :(

my fav line of this all,

" After that I was feeling great and even had a new nickname, "The Queen Jack Maniac." Except I made up the nickname for myself and didn't tell anyone about it."

bwhahahahaha! again sucks to get it in good and fucking a2 hits it :'(

glad you had a good time :D

    Sun, 07/16/2017 - 15:43

both are solid players that have proved they are capable of running deep and taking tournaments down. Ben Lamb got third I believe in a main event already, so he obviously knows what he is doing.

Nice read..Was getting bummed out for you at first, nice to see you rebounded and had fun doing it.
Stay away from the video roulette!!!
As for those weed dispense shops, be careful if you sign up. Read a article that one state was looking to raise car insurance costs on people that where using for medicinal reasons. I am betting its a bit of a honeypot and the governments bend the public over as many ways as they can to make cash.

I will ride David Guay as a fellow Canadian and beard rocker.

As of writing this post there are 80ish people left in the main event so it's probably too soon to start guessing who will win. That said, Connor Drinan is my pick. He's one of the more respected online pros, particularly known for the AA vs AA on the one drop, He's been crushing tournaments for years and likely has the most polished game left in the field.

SchaapHerder: At least you had a good time.. :)
    Sun, 07/16/2017 - 22:36

Sucks that those tournaments ended so brutally dude.. At least you didn't lose money on the trip (unlike lots & lots of people)... Also, i think Benjamin Pollak should have the main event IN THE BAG!

I'm very confused how you manage to write this article - you looked so high in this picture haha.

    Btw.
I'm very happy how you work hard to promote this awesome betcoin.ag site -

I'm expecting you in the final table :) - with Andrew Neeme and Will Kassouf. But no one seems survive in that tough tournament! ^_^

This is not our Year but there's more years to come for us! :D

In this on going main event - I like to see Michael Ruane win this Main event! :) .
I hope he can get it - he plays so good!

    Mon, 07/17/2017 - 02:42

Congrats on leaving vegas ahead sir, not many can say that !

My selection for winner of WSOP is totally random and without much research I'm afraid to say...

But there is a method to my madness and my selection..

    Karen Sarkisyan from Moscow.

Dont Know anything at all about this lady, But my perception tells me that if she were to win the WSOP, Poker in general would receive an absolute torrent of much needed publicity and I cant think of any better generator of postive publicity than a female winner.

As I type she has the 5th largest stack, so is obviously in with a shout.

Glad you had fun and made a profit. Love Vegas,
Did players hit you up about is it safe to play online?
Seemed to me, last trip there was still a strong sentiment against online poker.
Glad you got to get the word out about Betcoin, i bet that was some fun in itself.
Thanks for the really cool article Scot, got me laughing.

    Mon, 07/17/2017 - 14:18

To answer your question, PLO8, it wasn't so much a strong sentiment against it as people being unaware of the existence of US friendly online sites. I explained how using bitcoin is a way to make it quasi-legal as there are no banks directly accepting the transactions.
Moreso, though, were people who already play online but they play on sites that are much, much worse. They were happy to hear about Betcoin's personal service and fast payouts.

Sounds like you had one hell of a trip. Plus somehow you made money so all in all you have to consider the trip a success!

Out of the remaining players I like Antoine Saout to take home the bacon. The guy is an absolute animal. Eyeing his second main event final table and has been near he top of the field since day 2. He has the game and the confidence to finish the job.

Wish I could have been there as well xD but my nerves will probably cause me to spasm is someone tried to talk to me :p
Feel rather comfortable playing poker online.

I would have to go with the Frenchman Benjamin Pollak sitting with a sweet stack not in 1st but nowhere near last he's in a perfect spot to win this and I won't be surprised if he does.

    runrrunr: What a ride...
    Tue, 07/18/2017 - 08:24

Sounds like quite the adventure booze. Glad to hear that you were able to recapture the losses, it's never easy to walk out having taken a massive hit; and especially not when it's on something like video poker. Bummed you didn't make it father in the one drop, but at least you got a good story out of it all, and the support you received from your wife is truly all time. As for the winner of the main event, I'm going to take the unlikely choice of Blumstein. He's relatively quiet, but he's been running well and played well, and he's been holding first place for a good stretch now. I had been hoping for Lamb, and even prior to that Andrew Neeme, but I just don't think Lamb's going to go the distance. Anyway. Hope you have a great, and safe, trip home.

    Tue, 07/18/2017 - 10:35

Kind of reminds me of my first trip to Vegas, only I didn't end up winning. Won some money on blackjack then lost it on roulette. Decided to play 2/5 and I only had money for 1 buy-in and of course lost it all on 4th hand going all in with top 2 against a set. The guy also slowrolled me, took about 30 seconds to call me.

I'm glad you ended up on the positive note. I'm sure you learned something and the next year you will do better. Maybe you will have a roll for the main event by then.

As far as current main event, I have no idea who's the favorite, but I'm rooting for the old boy John Hesp. For a 64 year-old to win main event dominated by 20-35 year olds would be a great story.

    Tue, 07/18/2017 - 21:49

Why even gamble on bj, video poker, etc, when you know that it's ev- in the long term. Better use your poker skill and play higher limit games if you really want to gamble, give yourself the best chance. Why didn't you play more tournaments? Did you try to get staked for the main event?

Oh and my favorites are Bryan Piccioli and Benjamin Pollak. The current 2 chip leaders are rookies, so I doubt they will be able to keep their stack, but it's a tournament and anything can happen.

First off, biggest congratulations, hugs and kisses from myself for spectacular insight. I was eating every letter as if it was my own. I don't care if You did good or not, because I am sure You did Your best (except maybe the roulette thing, but that is just my attitude against player-vs-machine) and will keep on doing that. As for WSOP ME my personal favourites are Antoine Saout and Benjamin Pollak who both are French by coincidence. Looking forward to final action. Maybe someday I will get a bracelet of my own.
