Preparing for Your Online Poker Session with isnortbooze

Preparing your body and mind is a key attribute that can add to small edges and increase your win rate in big ways. Here are some things to consider before firing up your computer to play poker.

One aspect of online poker that many people take for granted is preparing for your upcoming session. They might think, what do I need to prepare for? I am just sitting in a chair for a few hours. But preparing your body and mind is a key attribute that can add to small edges and increase your win rate in big ways. Here are some things to consider before firing up your computer to play poker.

Play Fresh
I have lost more money on days when I was hungover than all other days combined. Fortunately, during the last few years, I have almost quit entirely playing hungover, but in the pre-Black Friday era I was unable to realize the effect that it had on me. When your brain is cloudy, you miss key moments of the match where that information could have helped you make a better decision down the line. Not only might you make bad decisions during the game, but my biggest leak was post game. I would often use poor game selection after losing which would cause me to play above my bankroll and this made me go broke many times. Plugging this leak was one of the biggest monetary and motivating factors to eventually turning pro.

Play or the Right Reasons
Another thing that causes loss of money for many players is playing for the wrong reasons. If you are playing for fun, it is a different story, but if you are trying to make money one of the worst things you can do is play because you are bored. You should go into each session with a clear head, ready to make good decisions for many hours to come. Remember, even if you only miss a couple things at the table per hour, those couple things add up and after a full day session, those intangible things you missed were actually value.

Get Your Sleep
Sleep is very, very important. I have 2 toddlers, one who doesn’t always sleep through the night. If I am too tired, I find that a 30-60 minute nap will refresh me in a big way. Missing the first hour of a tournament is not nearly as bad as playing the entire tournament while exhausted. Caffeine can be helpful, for a while, but there is no substitute for actually being rested. Coffee only lasts for so long and drinking too much of it is not good for your body. And taking care of your body is just as important as taking care of your mind.
Which leads me to proper eating and exercise. If you watch poker videos from the 80s and 90s, you will notice that many of the best players were overweight. The reason for that is, back then it was much harder to master the game. You could only play live and there was very little information on the subject, so to get good, you had to spend most of your time sitting in a smoke filled casino, eating greasy casino food. Then the internet came along and people could suddenly play more hands in a hour than live players could in a week. They not only had more time to study poker, they could study health as well. They realized that poker could be equated to athletics, in that if you treated your body well, it would treat you well during a 14+ hour session. Suddenly, the players you saw winning the most had healthy and fit bodies. They learned that heavy and greasy foods actually killed your energy and eating things like fast food and carbs, though tasty, could actually make them worse players. Working out is important as well, because it trains your body to handle those marathon sessions. Turns out sitting there is more work than we ever could have thought.
All of these tips can help you make better decisions on the felt, which will guarantee you higher profit in the long run. You still have to study and put in the hours to improve your game, but if you combine all of these self-improvement tips, you will increase your expected value. And probably your life. So next time you are about to sit down for a session, ask yourself if you are truly prepared. If not, do what it takes to get there and watch your bankroll go up!

Considering the aspect of sleep I think it's evident to see that performance is indicative of the player's capacity to think. If you are not operating at peak efficiency then you will simply be bested in the battle of attrition that can take place in tournaments or cash games (deep stacks).

Realizing this, I believe that above all else, sleep is the most vital aspect of healthy poker play. Playing while slightly tilted can impact performance but I would be willing to say that more impulsive play comes from being tired and I know that lots of people can be cranky.

I agree with not playing hungover as i have done that many times and never have a clear head and do good hungover..I also like to before a good session make sure to have a clear understanding with the wife and myself that i will be playing a session and make sure its ok so i have no disruptions. And also always make sure ya have enough hydration and food ready to go :)

I like to play when I'm not tired, because if I am, I play bad - basically I do not pay attention at every point in the hand like I do when I am well rested and focused on the action intensely. I've recently changed the way I eat because I've been feeling sick - ended up getting a blood test with elevated A1C and some other stuff - and since then I've noticed a BIG difference in my game. I pretty much quit messing with fast food and focus on eating vegetables and snack healthy throughout the day - plus I've been exercising. I find that paying attention gets me a lot further and without proper rest, food and mental clarity I'm pretty much dead money.

I miss this site but have been getting a lot of rewards on ACR so I've been gone from Betcoin. I began playing here some time ago. Used to be daily, all day. I made hella deposits and never really got any cool stuff like a 250 gtd ticket, yet I used to ALWAYS see the same players in it week after week - kinda another reason I took off from here. Now I'm a general contractor and still a lottery author. My ACR handle is Going The Distance. I've been doing well with cashing tourneys, some big ones too, just been caught up there. You can see on sharkscope.

Something i have never given much thought to..
Perhaps this is why there is so much veriances in my game, profit/loss, tourney results etc.

Big problem is that the best tourney's on most sites are timed to start very late in the evening in my timezone, and to run deep means an all-nighter. Proper rest and sleep can be difficult to acheive given the time-zone differences. Though, I understand that this should be no excuse !!

Now might be the right time to take a look at my sleep patterns etc and try a few games without having my normal glass or six of vino as sustinance :-)

First I go to my local dry cleaners and get my favorite smoking jacket starched and pressed. Then I go over to the state line liquor store and buy a handle of fireball. I get a carton of Newports, tell my chick to stifle for a few hours, cue up some porn, then its off to the races. Never won much other than peace and quiet....

I like what you have said. One thing I do and many other's WE dont use the time bank like we should no need to rush into a hand theres time to think or use the bank to make your nut hand look week maybe your not sure if u should bet a couple moves the other players may raise to try and take the pot or push u all in for a double up. Many reasons but figured id toss that out there :)

My preparation for my self before i play my poker session...
I make sure that before i start my poker sessions, all things that I need to do should be all done. Because playing poker needed such time specially the concentration. Playing poker online should require focus because it's too risky playing poker online while you're thinking other things or by forcing your hand for such distraction. I my self have experience distraction a lot when i play my poker sessions during my distraction time, I call it "distraction time" because there's too much distraction when i played my poker sessions during morning until the late afternoon, because i have two kids and i have a lot of things to do for them. That's why i usually play my online poker sessions when my kids are already a sleep at night and usually they're a sleep at late night 8:00-9:00 pm.
So my preparations goes like this everyday.. Hmmmm,, not good to play and risk my poker hands every time when there's much distraction around. So that's how I prepare my self for my poker sessions.

Hello! Since I have very little time for poker and I play more for fun, sleep and good mood are very important to me!
I think you need to go to tournaments with a clear head, but I like playing poker with marijuana! And then I play more restrained and carefully analyze the situation at the tables.

Great post by isnortbooze!

Good luck to all!

HowItdo: The first thing I do to get
Tue, 08/08/2017 - 14:02

The first thing I do to get ready for a poker session is a good nights sleep. Playing sleep deprived takes away from your A game and forces you to play worse overall. Next I make sure to study off the table to improve my play and learn from my mistakes. This allows you to feel prepared to play poker again. After studying I find that I feel more invigorated to start a session and play longer sessions. Finally I find the right music to listen to--something that allows me to focus but also help me distract from the lull period that inevitably comes with playing a session.

Mentat: I'm currently preparing for
Tue, 08/08/2017 - 16:10

I'm currently preparing for entry into poker hopefully within the next six months or so, possibly much further down the line. Here is a bit of what I have done and what I plan on doing.

1) Stay up to date on my study materials, mostly books with videos mixed in. I'm hoping to hole up for a while so I can get better with constructing GTO type ranges and original strategies that Doug Polk hasn't given away yet in his excellent material. Basically stuff that's a little further down the road in mundane aspects. The fact that I don't know if it's worth anything keeps me from diving knee deep into it though.

I practice a lot with meta things but I mostly find it wierd, boring, and for other people's interest and benefit. I'm more of a nitty gritty this = that kinda guy, but I do like diving into more occult aspects of the game such as "if i generate shitty energy can i bluff this person" etc.... unfortunately this serves as a major barrier for me to enter the live arena and probably disqualifies me altogether. More reason to buckle down on math for online and hope that energy doesn't apply ;)

2) I try to stay on top of my nutrition, but I can't afford it. For someone like me, carrots are a good value buy for keeping my liver enzymes relatively healthy and off setting a lot of the garbage that I take in. I'm hoping to be able to invest into a Nootropic mushroom regimen in the near future - Lions Mane, Cordyceps, and Reishi are great starting points for regeneration and maintenance along with some of the other staples such as Red Yeast Rice, Ashwanga, Cumin powder, Cinnamon, Niacinmide, and stuff like that.

I haven't been taking the best care of my kidneys, so I'm glad I thought of that.

Prior to a poker session I try to remove all external stimulus that I do not want in my realm. If I can not remove it, I either do not play or attempt to adapt so that I can.

I visualize myself "balling" in a knot-drug-induced trance, blackout hydra end boss status. No one can enter my energy field. My opponents do not exist. Their thoughts are meaningless. I then select some shitty trance music and pwn everyone. Modern day I would probably go with something lighter like Bach but I wouldn't be suprised if I go for a stroke, absent of being able to take some shots at live sometime someday.

Ticket Ticket Ticket Thangks

cjmoles: Reduce the stress.
Tue, 08/08/2017 - 20:28

Actually, this is probably the most valuable advice given so far. The way we approach our sessions effects the way we play in ways that we don't perceive cognitively. A close evaluation of our game histories can highlight our most successful days of the week, our peek session lengths, and our optimal playing times. From that information we can prepare for our sessions in advance.

We should also consider and reduce outside factors which might influence our play because sometimes we play when we're tilted for reasons unrelated to poker and we don't even realize it---> It would suck to lose the whole roll just because the parrot ate our 20 dollar slippers--that's all I'm saying!

OneTime: I try to always make sure
Tue, 08/08/2017 - 21:58

I try to always make sure that playing poker is the only thing I want to do. If I would rather be relaxing, playing video games, or snowboarding, I simply do not play. Another thing worth mentioning is that I try to get a lot of sleep every night. I have found that when I am tired, I play poorly, and, in general, don’t want to play.

poolios: I do some quick meditation
Tue, 08/08/2017 - 22:20

I do some quick meditation for 10 minutes then make some coffee for energy and finish it off with light exercises/stretching. Eating healthy is important too. If you eat shit then you will feel like shit and therefore play like shit.

jramy: What i'm getting into
Tue, 08/08/2017 - 22:44

Well obviously you must know what kind of tournament your registering into; is it a hyper-turbo, a turbo, or a normal style tournamet.
1. Hyper-turbo- If i'm joining a hyper-turbo i'm not really preparing much I just register when I feel like it I could be sick, sleepy or even bored these style tournaments require little preparation as they are usually bingo style. All in here, all in there get it in hope your outs hit the flop and your good to go.

2. Turbo- These tournaments this is where I start preparing I make sure I have a nice bit of water and i'm well rested like i'm not just gonna drop dead in the tournament in the middle of the night. Secondly I always have myself something to eat this is very important because you will feel nauseous and that can really hamper your playing style.

3. And finally normal style tournaments these tournaments I usually prepare myself in every shape or form.
First I make sure I had a nice meal and something to drink before the tournament, which should last me awhile before I get hungry again but should last until you reach a break.
Secondly I make sure I am fully rested, I ain't entering a tournament falling asleep on myself and next thing blind out and make that a waste of money and chips. This is extremely important for your own health as well.
And Lastly and most importantly take a shower xD. Like please you don't want to play a tournament and you find yourself all sticky in sweat etc. You will feel uncomfortable and that is not good and could mess up your game big time. Get a shower before your tournament.

Fri, 08/11/2017 - 23:22

Well to start off, I get up take a shower and scream. I scream "Hut Hut Motha FN Hike" then run in place for a period of 5 minutes. After that, I do 25 push ups and 25 sit up's saying Ace Ace King King each rep. " No sets because I'm kinda a big boy". Then I start my computer after a hot shower and visulations of winning. Please don't think I'm lying :( this is true ;P. I then come out the bathroom click on the computer and go grab a energy drink and a protein bar. I then sit down at the computer pull becoins poker software up and begin searching to snipe my victims. When I find a perfect victim I go into my room smell my wife and say I can't loose her or this. Then I hear the sound it's my turn and I begin playing.
