Guess who's back, back again. High stakes poker legend Tom Dwan has all but dissapeared from the public eye over the last few years. But starting this Monday, he will be on a reboot of the popular Poker After Dark program. This new edition of Poker After Dark premiers this Monday at 8PM and can be seen exclusively on Poker Central's PokerGo. Dwan will also be appearing on the show Tuesday and Wednesday at the same time.
Controversary Cleared Up
There have been many rumors of Dwan's whereabouts over the last few years. People have speculated that he is broke, or worse yet in debt and enslaved to the Hong Kong mafia syndicate, the Triads. In reality, he has been out of the spotlight, but playing in the highest stakes games in the world in Macau and Manila with Phil Ivey. Others are upset with him for not finishing his 50,000 hand challenge with Dan "Jungleman" Cates, going as far to say that he was a scammer. Jungleman recently cleared this up on Doug Polk's podcast, explaining the Dwan has every intention to finish the challenge and has actually paid him $7-800,000 USD in penalties for taking too long. It would seem that Dwan is not broke at all and on the contrary, doing quite well as he will pony up at least the minimum buyin of $100,000 for this high stakes matchup with $200/400 blinds and a $400 button ante. And that buyin is small potatoes compared to the Macau games, which are rumored to have millions of dollars exchanging hands in a single pot.
Tom Dwan Quotes
Dwan is never one to hold back about what he is feeling and he said some interesting things in a recent interview with Poker Central.
On the return of Poker After Dark:
"All over the world people liked watching those, and every time I get asked 'When will they be back?' I'm excited that now, after six years, they will be back."
On his previous experience with the show:
“The shows were fun, they ended up being more interesting and more fun than I expected. It also helped that I won basically every hand that I played. If I called they were bluffing, if I was bluffing they folded. I’m hoping that continues.
On production of the show:
“I’m happy to play on any show that Poker PROductions does, the cash games are bigger and in a much easier and relaxed environment and I have a good time doing them. Now seems like a good time for the show to be restarting and I’ll be there as much as I can.”
Tom Dwan's incalculable style made for some of the most memorable hands on the show including a hand against Antonio Esfaniari where his higher set over set felted "The Magician". Esfandiari will be back Monday to try and get revenge for that hand along with TV favorite Daniel Negreanu. High stakes icons Doyle Brunson and Andrew Robl will take the place of Esfandiari and Negreanu on Tuesday and Wednesday's shows. Additional opponents include Jean-Robert Bellande, Laura Roberts and Bill Klein.
My Personal Feelings
Dwan has been a personal hero to me since I started to take poker seriously in 2008-2010. Although I have always had faith in him, it was extremely gratifying to me to hear the Jungleman interview and have his name cleared up. One huge reason for this is that I named my son after no. Not Tom, either. That would be easily disguisable. My son's middle name is Dwan. So even though I have always been proud of his namesake, it is a big deal to me personally for the Dwan name to be untarnished and a legacy my son can be proud of one day. I managed to make it through the World Series of Poker without subscribing to PokerGo. But there is no way in hell I'm missing these shows and I'm sure I will be one of many who subscribes just to get another look at the legend that is Tom Dwan.
