The Animal kingdom has a new "king of the jungle" if you will, and he is happily retired as he resides in Durango, Colorado. It's not every day you hear about an animal becoming a repeat offender (yes you have heard that right) but that seems to be the case this past week. Previously, in October 2024, a pet kangaroo had made an escape through the town, leading police officers on a wild chase that eventually ended with them capturing, and returning the pet to its owner. Now, not only do I have limited knowledge on Kangaroos, I also had no idea up until now that they could be tamed as pets outside of Australia. Skip a year later, this same Kangaroo managed to escape his homeowners once again this past week, and found himself happily hopping around town until he ended up in a neighbours' backyard. Now, with my experience of Kangaroo videos, it's commendable that Kangaroo was able to keep his cool, and not add-on additional charges such as assault, because these feisty buggers can certainly throw hands.
Not only must this be a humorous day on the job for officers, I'm sure it's not everyday most people in town see a random sighting of a Kangaroo hopping through town, enjoying the nice weather and going on about his day. Earning the title of "Durango's Most Unexpected Repeat Offender," I'd imagine not much action goes down in the small town of Durango, and quite honestly may be a place worth settling down some day if the only police calls are about escaping pet animals. Even more interesting, it appears that this specific type of mammal that goes by the Red Kangaroo is perfectly legal to have as a pet animal. Funny enough there is an odd, and wild list of other mammals you can apparently own as pets in Colorado such as Zebras, Wallabies, and short-tailed possums.
Quite honestly I'm surprised residents haven't been opening up their own Petting Zoos at this rate the way the laws are with animals, but who am I to judge? If you're ever in the market to start your own exotic animal business, it turns out this would in fact be the perfect location to do it. Best case scenario, you get your own Netflix series and become the new Tiger King. This Kangaroo could quite possibly escape Alcatraz at this rate, but all jokes aside it's nice to see that this is the news popping up from time to time when the world can be such a disastrous place. Regardless if you're an animal lover or not, I'd rather play my cards right and continue taking my dog for a walk, because I can't even begin to process how many walks a Kangaroo needs in a day.
